Choosing a Tex-Mex supplier? Here’s what to check

Thinking of adding taco shells, tortillas or dinner kits to your range of products? Before you order it’s important to find out what you are ordering and if it works for your customers. Underneath you’ll find 5 steps to make sure you won’t make expensive mistakes.

1. Try the food first

Ask for samples and prepare them as the instructions say. Fill the taco shells and pick them up. Do they not fall apart and do they have a good crunch? Warm the tortillas and see how easily they fold.

Don’t go extreme with the filling and use normal portions so you can taste the product too. Beans or grilled vegetables are perfect.

2. Check the contents and sizes

A kit that works for a supermarket shopper is not ideal for a restaurant. Check how many pieces come in each pack and how many packs come in a box. Also look on the labels. Are the ingredients and preparation instructions clear? Are they available in the right language?

3. Find out how much shelf life is left

Don’t forget shelf life. That’s the time you have to sell them before the products pass their expiration date. Buying larger quantities can lower the price, but it won’t save you money if you can’t sell them all.

4. Check the pricing with everything included

Ask for the price of a complete order. That means delivery, extra labelling and packaging if you want to use a private label. If you’re looking into Tex-Mex distribution in Europe, tell the supplier your location, what you need and how often you expect to order. That gives them the information needed to put together a useful quote.

5. Start with a few products

Start with products your customers are almost certain to buy. After that you can test with new products. San Pedro Foods makes taco shells, corn tortillas and dinner kits in the Netherlands. They have an experienced team that can answer all your questions about pack sizes, markets and of course their products.

Do your research checking some details and this saves you from expensive mistakes in the future.
